The Task Force Meeting of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean National Institutes of Educational Research Held in Beijing

On April 14, 2014, a task force meeting for a joint research project of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean National Institutes of Educational Research took place at our institute. This meeting was convened following the agreement of intent signed at the Third Meeting among the Heads of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean National Institutes of Educational Research in October 2013, proposing that the three research institutes cooperate to jointly conduct research in areas of shared interest.

Altogether 14 researchers attended the meeting, including Akihiko Hashimoto and Taro Numano from the National Institute for Educational Policy Research, Japan, Bang-ran Ryu and Eun-kyoung Park from the Korean Educational Development Institute, and Wang Su and Wang Yan among others of the task team from our institute.

The object of the tripartite research project is to conduct a joint survey into pupils’ learning at primary and middle schools in China, Japan and Korea, as pupils seem to have relatively heavy academic burden in each of the three countries. It is therefore important to study the pupils’ learning situation and the factors that affect their learning performance. The main purpose of the task force meeting was to discuss the research methods, instrument, procedure, etc. of the joint survey.

Vice President of NIES, Dr. Liu Jianfeng, delivered a welcome speech at the beginning of the meeting. He recalled the Third Meeting among the heads of the three institutes and expressed his full confidence in the success of the joint survey. Following his speech, a detailed discussion ensued about the conceptual framework, research methodology, structure of the final report, and timeline of the joint survey. Issues concerning the Fourth Meeting among the Heads of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean National Institutes of Educational Research, to be held in Japan later this year, were also discussed toward the end of the meeting.
