The 5th Southeast Asia-China Education Research Network Meeting Held in Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Fifth Southeast Asia-China Education Research Network Meeting was held in Siem Reap, Cambodia on December 11-12, 2018. The meeting was co-organized by the National Institute of Education Sciences (NIES) of the People’s Republic of China, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) of Cambodia, and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). Representatives from countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, China, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam participated in the meeting.

Cui Baoshi, President of NIES, Nath Bunroeun, the vice minister of the MoEYS and the vice president of the Education Research Council (ERC) addressed the opening ceremony. Cui reviewed the achievements since the establishment of the Southeast Asia-China Education Research Network, shared Chinese President Xi Jinping’s comments on the work of teachers at the National Education Conference and elaborated on China’s priorities and policies for teachers since the reform and opening-up process begun four decades ago. At the end of his remarks, Cui called for more cooperative and mutually-beneficial research among members of the Southeast Asia-China Education Research Network. Bunroeun stressed the importance of professionalism in teaching, as well as the training and development of teachers, and urged for more cooperation in this sphere between South-East Asia and China.

At the meeting, representatives from member countries shared their strategies and policies on how to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Teacher Development) and engaged in in-depth discussions on “twelve key issues in teacher development”. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Wang Yan, Director of Department for International Exchange of the NIES and Dr. Samsideth Dy, Secretary General of Education Research Council of the MoEYS.

Ahead of the meeting, Cui attended the China-Cambodia Seminar on Teacher Development, co-organized by the NIES and the ERC. The two sides shared policies and practices for teacher development and proposed related cooperative research projects.

Co-organized by the NIES, ASEAN-China Centre and SEAMEO, the Southeast Asia-China Education Research Network has held four annual meetings in Guiyang, Bangkok and Guilin.
