NIES Launches Satisfactory Survey on Basic Education

    China-U.S. Education Think Tank Dialogue, sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China and organized by our institute, was held on June 7th-9th, 2016 in Beijing. It was an activity of the 7th Annual China-U.S. High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange. About 150 education policy-makers, administrators and researchers from renowned educational research institutions, colleges and universities of the two nations attended the dialogue, including the National Institute of Education Sciences, National Center for Education Development Research, Tsinghua University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University from China, and the National Center on Education and the Economy, Harvard University, Stanford University, and National Education Policy Center from the United States.

  Hao Ping, Deputy Minister of Education, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. He stated that China-U.S. Education Think Tank Dialogue was an essential part of China-U.S. People-to-People Exchange mechanism, and its significance should be recognized from the strategic view of establishing a new relationship between the two nations. He put forward three suggestions: First, strengthen exchanges and cooperation for capacity development of education think tanks in the two nations. Second, improve the dialogue mechanismfor  the establishment of new relationship between the two nations. Third, fulfill the commitment as big powers to the global education reform and the peaceful development of human beings.

  With the theme of “Educational Research, Policymaking and Innovation in the Knowledge-Based Economy”, extensive discussions were held by means of keynote lectures and speeches, and interactive communications. Dr. Tian Huisheng, President of the National Institute of Education Sciences of China, and Mr. Marc Tucker, President and CEO of the National Center on Education and the Economy of United States delivered a keynote speech entitled “Education Reform Achievements and Prospects in China” and “American Education Reform in the Context of Globalization” respectively. Prof. Fernando Reimers, Director of the International Education Policy Program at Harvard University, Prof. Susanna Loeb, Co-director of Policy Analysis at Stanford University, Prof. Xie Weihe of Tsinghua University, and Prof. Zhang Minxuan of Shanghai Normal University also gave keynote speeches. Participants from the two nations spoke and exchanged views at sessions themed “Education Reform and Development”, “Curriculum Reform for the 21st Century”, “Innovation in Classrooms and Schools”, “Higher Education Reform & Employment”, “Education Standard and Evaluation”, “Teacher Training and Professional Development”, and “Education Development and Innovation”. Dr. Liu Jianfeng, Vice President of the National Institute of Education Sciences of China, chaired the opening and closing ceremonies, and President Tian Huisheng addressed the opening and closing ceremonies.

  President Tian Huisheng and representatives of American delegates attended the 7th Annual China-U.S. High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange, co-chaired by Vice Premier Liu Yandong and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on June 7 in China’s National Museum. The U.S. delegates visited Beijing Haidian Minzu Primary School and Beijing No. 35 High School, which hosted the “China-U.S. School Principal Dialogue” as a side event of “China-U.S. Education Think Tank Dialogue”. Principals from American education reform model schools, Beijing No. 35 High School, and Beijing No. 2 Experimental Elementary School conducted in-depth discussions with the theme of “the New Paradigm of School Development in the 21st Century”, including school development, teacher and student development, and China-U.S. schoolexchange. Vice President Liu Jianfeng addressed the opening ceremony and participated in the meeting throughout.

  The activity was organized by the National Institute of Education Sciences of China in collaboration with the National Center on Education and the Economy of the United States, and co-organized by the National Center for Education Development Research, Beijing Institute of Education Sciences, Shandong Institute of Education Sciences, Beijing No. 35 Middle School, Beijing Haidian Minzu Primary School, and Beijng Royal School from China, and the Global Education Innovation Initiative at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Research Center of National Education Policy, California State University Northridge, University of Northern Colorado, University of Hawaii – Kapi’olani Community College, and the National Institute of Innovation Education from the United States.

  The participants exchanged on the most recent education policies in China and the U.S., the state-of-art findings of educational research, and the experiences of building the first-class education think tank. During the meeting, representative from think-tanks  on both sides discussed a draft of “Strategic Framework on China-U.S. EducationResearch Cooperation ”. Delegates all spoke highly of the Dialogue , and expected to continue it as part of annual U.S.-China People-to-People Exchange in the future to promote the reform and development of education both in China and the United States.
