Upon invitation, Professor Fernando Reimers from the Harvard Graduate School of Education visited NIES on September 11 and 12.
On September 11, Professor Reimers made a keynote speech at a seminar entitled Promoting Education in the 21st Century sponsored by NIES. He spoke about education purposes in an age of globalization, global competency and the challenges of global education, followed by a panel discussion on topics such as 21st century skills, educational innovation, and innovative talent training presented by Dr. Chen Ruping from the Research Centre for Basic Education of NIES, and Prof. Zheng Guomin from Beijing Normal University, etc. Over 100 researchers from NIES, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China and other institutions attended the seminar.
The next morning Professor Reimers had a discussion with representatives from NIES, Beijing Normal University and Beijing Institute of Education Sciences about collaboration on the Global Education Innovation Initiative, a research initiative proposed by the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Initiative supports the development of global education leadership for 21st century education by conducting research on innovative practices, training leaders, and creating a dynamic learning network of global partners interested in educational innovation.
Professor Reimers is the Ford Foundation Professor of International Education and Director of the International Education Policy Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His research focuses on the relationship between education policy and instructional improvement in high poverty schools, on education and democratic citizenship as well as educational innovation and social entrepreneurship.
